Powerchair football is an internationally competitive sport governed by the Federation Internationale De Powerchair Football Association (FIPFA) played on Powerchairs it is very similar to Futsal/Football.
This description comes directly from “New Zealand Powerchair Football” (NZPF)
Powerchair football is a competitive team sport for people with physical disabilities who use powerchairs for their mobility.
The rules are similar to outdoor football with a few modifications.
Players include people with quadriplegia, neuromuscular conditions, cerebral palsy, head injury, spinal cord injury and other disabilities.
The game is played in a gymnasium on a regulation basketball court.
Two teams of four players use their powerchairs to attack, defend and spin-kick a 13 inch football in an attempt to score goals.
Every powerchair has a guard to hit the ball.
The Wanderers WASPS are the Waikato’s only Powerchair football team. We meet roughly fortnightly and have two seasons in a standard year. Currently we have approximately 8 team members with one Player travelling from Tauranga. The WASPS home is Hillcrest High School gym. Trainings usually last about 2 hours and are intense and fast, combining drills and games. A lot of the drills we use are taken and adapted directly from football. But just like Football we really just want to play games!
